A few notes
Online safety matters for everyone, but when you travel alone, you don’t have someone with you to help if things go wrong. If your card or phone stops working, there’s no one else to cover the bill or help you find your way. You have to handle it yourself. That’s why all the boring prep work is even more important when you’re on your own.
If you scroll through social media, it can feel like solo travelers are always trying to prove something. But your first time traveling solo doesn’t need to be a big deal. There’s no prize for choosing a less-traveled destination or staying in hostels, or even being adventurous. Do it quietly, do it loud. Do it lying by the pool or hiking up a mountain. Do it however you want to.
'I want to go home' is a reaction many solo travelers have had at one time or another. But it's just that, a reaction. If you find yourself in that situation, try to figure out why. Maybe you hate the destination. Maybe you need people. Maybe the itinerary is wrong. Maybe you truly are done. Sometimes the fix isn't a return flight.
Solo travel tip
When you travel solo, where you stay can do more than give you a bed. It can make the logistics easier, give you built-in ways to meet people, or give you somewhere to disappear for a while when you’ve had enough of people.
- Hotels · Best for when you want your accommodation choice to make the trip easier logistically
- Hostels · Best for when you want social opportunities built into your stay
- Pods and capsule hotels · Best for short city stays and transit nights
- Vacation rentals and Airbnbs · Best for when you want a kitchen and more independence
