A few of my insights
Looking for a restaurant when you're standing on the corner hungry and you'll end up at whatever you or Google can see around you. But do some research ahead of time and you might find a meal you can't stop talking about. Not every meal needs to be planned of course, but have a few ready to go before you head out.
I've been on some bad tours, and they're usually the ones where I just didn't see the obvious red flags because I was rushing or tired. Most of these warning signs aren't subtle, so they just need a moment of your time. One I definitely look for is the size of the tour. Smaller tours just move faster.
I'm definitely someone who opens the windows and lets the sunshine in, and then suffers through a warm night. But when I want to sleep well, I resist the urge. Like anything when traveling, a little planning ahead helps. Even when booking, as the nicest place and the best place to sleep might not be the same.
Travel tip
If the airline wants volunteers to give up seats, remember: their first offer is just that, an opening bid. Ask about cash, meal vouchers, hotel stays, and when you’ll actually get to your destination. If you volunteer, you might lose some protections you’d get if you were bumped against your will.
