When you check a suitcase, it enters a huge automated system with tags, scanners, conveyor belts, and handoffs. Old barcode stickers, loose straps, late bag drops, and tight connections all increase the chances of something going wrong. Remove old tags, secure your bag, allow enough time for it to make the flight, and keep photos or a tracker handy just in case it doesn’t.

Your bag still has to be manageable
Airline rules are just one part of the story. You still need to lift your bag, carry it through the airport, find what you need without unpacking everything, and share space with other travelers. Weigh your bag before you get to the counter, pack it so it's comfortable to carry, keep important items easy to reach, and remember that luggage gets much more frustrating if it starts to slow you down.

Skis, golf clubs, and camera gear are more than just oddly shaped bags. Their value, fragility, weight, and how easy they are to replace can all affect the best way to travel with them. Think it through before hauling your own equipment through several airports just because it's yours.
