Even if you mostly enjoy your own company, sometimes it’s nice to have someone to talk to about what you’re seeing or laugh with along the way. But not everyone is outgoing and easily attracts people wherever they go. For most of us, meeting people is hard. Meeting people isn’t the same as making friends. Some people you meet during a three-hour tour, share some laughs with, and then go your own way. Others you travel with for a few days before one of you moves on to the next city. Keep your expectations realistic when meeting someone, and don’t expect every connection to become a lifelong friendship. So how do you meet people? There’s no magic trick, of course, but from my own experience and reading others’ stories and tips, I’ve found a few key things we can do to increase our chances of meeting people. - Put yourself around people repeatedly - Be the one to engage instead of waiting - Take advantage of apps and travel tools - Leave enough room in the trip for friendship to evolve ### Put yourself around people repeatedly Putting yourself in places where you can meet other people is a well-known step. There’s a lot of advice about staying in hostels, joining walking tours, or going to organized events. When you already have a reason to be together, there’s usually something in common to talk about. Maybe it’s the tour guide’s quirky hat or what everyone is cooking in the shared kitchen, but this shared experience takes away the pressure to find something to talk about. Look for activities where people share a goal. Volunteering for a cause, joining a trivia team, or taking a cooking class can have you working with others toward the same purpose. Your hobbies can also help you find people you might like. A yoga class, a morning swim, a language exchange, or a food tour all give you at least one thing in common. To improve your chances, think about timing and use any social opportunities. For example, spend time in the common area in the morning or whenever people are deciding what to do. Ask a tour operator if anyone is looking for others to join them, or go to the meetup spot before a tour starts and see if there’s room to join. You often have to go first. It doesn’t have to be anything big; you don’t have to impress everyone, but you might need to say hi or ask if you can join. Taking one small step can be all you need. And don’t wait until you feel confident. Like almost anything, you get better at meeting people by trying even if you don’t do it well at first. Being easy to approach is more helpful advice than it seems. Staring at your phone or wearing headphones can block chances to meet people. I won’t cover them all here, but it’s good to think about what kind of connection you want before picking one. Then you can choose what fits you best. Set it up before you leave home so you don’t spend days just learning the tech. If you use dating apps, be honest about how long you’ll stay and clear about your intentions. And it goes without saying, but always have a safety plan when meeting people from an app. Meet in busy public places and keep control of your own way home.
