Navigating Airports

Airports have a way of making simple things feel more complicated than they should. Just when you think you've figured it out, there's another checkpoint, shuttle, or terminal. We looked back on our airport experiences and sifted through hundreds of resources to see what you should know to make airports a little bit easier.

Most airport hassles can be avoided before you even leave home

Check in online early, get the airline app, and download the airport map. Keep your passport and boarding pass where you can grab them without digging. Figure out your ride to and from the airport before the day arrives. Airports are a mix of lines, confusion, and clocks ticking down, so anything you can sort out ahead of time is one less thing to stress about.

A layover needs a plan, not just enough minutes

Don’t just trust the official connection time. Find out if you’ll need to switch terminals, go through security or customs, or pick up your bags. Some airports are better at connections than others. If your layover is short, pack light and know your route and backup plan. If it’s long, decide in advance if you’ll stay in the terminal, try a lounge, or venture into the city.

Find your gate before you get distracted

After security, figure out where your gate is and how long it takes to get there before you go looking for food or shops. Once you know you won’t miss your flight, see what’s nearby. Sometimes there’s a lounge you can pay for, a quiet spot to sit, or at least a meal that isn’t a sad sandwich.

Boarding is the wrong time for last-minute negotiations

Gate agents are juggling seats, standbys, crew, and the clock. If you want to change seats, do it in the app or ask before boarding starts. Wait for your group, get your bags sorted, and have your documents ready. If the overhead bins are full, it’s not a legal case. Just hand over your bag and move on.
