A few notes
Booking the first night is, in my opinion, always good advice. Even if you plan to get there with plenty of time to wander around, travel days often don't go according to plan. Next thing you know, it's dark and you're tired and that's when you might overspend or make a questionable decision.
My days of running on a few hours of sleep before taking on a city are mostly behind me. I travel with earplugs and a white noise app ready as backup. I find sleep masks very uncomfortable though, so I've started traveling with stickers that cover various lights in the room. A blinking light or a TV power indicator are no match for me.
Solo travel tip
I'm particular about my travel purses, and a few years back I just couldn't find one I liked with all the security features I wanted. That's when I discovered zipper clips that you can buy inexpensively and help secure any purse or bag.
