I see versions of the same question all the time in solo travel groups:
"How much money do I need for Thailand?"
"Is $3,000 enough for Europe?"
"Can I afford to travel Japan on $100 a day?"
The problem is that nobody can really answer those questions for you.
Two people can visit the same country for the same length of time and spend completely different amounts of money. One person is happy in hostels, takes local buses, and eats at markets. Another wants private rooms, occasional taxis, and a few nice dinners. Neither is doing it wrong.
That's why broad budget questions are so hard to answer. The real answer is always some variation of 'it depends', which isn't very helpful when you're trying to plan a travel budget. What is helpful is figuring out how you travel and building your budget from there.
When someone asks how much money they need for a country, what they're really asking is how much their version of that country will cost.
If you're wondering how people afford to travel in the first place? Everyone's situation is different, but most solo travelers aren't secretly wealthy.
For me, travel happens because I've decided it's more important to me than some other things I could spend money on. I don't drive a new car. I borrow books from the library. I say no to plenty of things I'd enjoy spending money on. That's not meant as advice. It's just a reminder that when you see someone traveling a lot, the answer usually isn't a secret. It's priorities.
Solo Travel Tip
You don't have to fly to another continent to practice solo travel. Start with a meal, a day trip, or an afternoon somewhere new. Most people aren't nervous about traveling alone. They're nervous about being alone, and that's a skill you can practice close to home.
