Most people booking a place to stay for a trip can easily find a hotel near the city centre and call it a day. Solo travelers have a more complex relationship with where to stay.

Location matters more when it affects how you get around after dark. Accommodation far from where you spend your time can mean a long walk home or navigating public transportation alone at night. Taxis and Ubers help, but they can eat into your budget. You don’t want your accommodation choice to inadvertently give you a curfew.

Accommodations are one part of travel where the price doesn’t change based on how many people you are. Single supplements typically apply more to tours and cruises, but at hotels, the rate is the rate.

Being alone means you have to lean more on the people and infrastructure around you for things you might get from travel partners. Accommodation is a big one here, since an overnight staffed front desk, luggage storage, someone who can find you a taxi, or even a hotel restaurant can matter more when you're solo.

Depending on how you travel, you may want different things from your accommodation. Someone exhausted from the day may want a quieter, peaceful space. Another who spent the day on their own may want a livelier atmosphere and a way to connect with other people.

Other things probably matter too, depending on how you travel, but these are some of the main ones. From there, it really comes down to what you need from the place you’re staying and which trade-offs you’re willing to make.

### Hotels

**Best for** when you want your accommodation choice to make the trip easier logistically.

Reception, housekeeping, luggage storage, airport transfers, and someone around to ask for help can all be worth the cost, especially when you’re dealing with late arrivals, a short stay, or you don’t want to manage another thing yourself. Not all hotels are equally safe. Look for a staffed 24-hour desk, security or controlled entry after dark and strong reviews from other solo travelers. From the reviews, you can also uncover who the typical clientele of a hotel is. A place with lots of couples may not feel the same as one with a mix of travelers passing through. While hotels with rooms made for singles do exist, most hotels aren’t designed this way, and it will be up to you if the cost is worth it.

### Hostels

**Best for** when you want social opportunities built into your stay.

While you still have to engage, hostels give you the opportunities with common rooms, shared kitchens, events and even classes. You can opt in or out, but the choices are there either way. Hostels and travelers who have stayed there often label places as social hostels or party hostels. These can clue you in on which hostels make interaction easy and which focus on drinking and nightlife. Another place to look is the hostel event calendar. Once you find the right type of hostel, consider if you’d prefer the dorm or a private room. A private room in a social hostel can be a smart hybrid option when you want the opportunity but still value private space and a better chance of uninterrupted sleep.

### Pods and capsule hotels

**Best for** short city stays and transit nights

This is another take on the hybrid stay for solo travelers, with the appeal of not paying for space you don’t need. These accommodations generally still have shared spaces like bathrooms, and you may need to leave your bigger items and luggage in a locker. Often, these stays are located in a city centre or near transportation hubs, making them useful when you need a spot before an early train or want to be in the centre when you wake up. Don’t assume all pods are soundproof. Some have thin physical separation, and you still get a dose of noise with some claustrophobia thrown in.

### Vacation rentals and Airbnbs

**Best for** when you want a kitchen and independent living

Being able to cook your own meal or have something in the fridge handy when you’re not feeling like eating alone again or heading out after dark can change how comfortable you feel in a city. If it’s a shared rental with a host, there is an upside in having a local to interact with and give you advice, but be prepared to enter their environment, and always make sure the bedroom door locks for your peace of mind. For longer stays where you are working, or trips where you want some alone time, a full rental is a solid option. Check the host and their reviews if having someone responsive when you need help matters to you.

Resorts can work too, but they’re worth looking at a little differently when you’re solo. Some are clearly made for couples, and even if they aren’t, that’s often who they attract. If you’re solo but like the idea, check out a wellness resort. These are known for having more activities you do alone, like massages, sauna sessions, and forest walks. The whole point of many of these is to be quiet and reflective.

A nice thing about being alone is you can change your mind, and you don’t have to pick one place for the whole stay. Maybe a hotel works best on your first night after arriving at the airport after dark; a rental for a week gives you space to wander and relax, followed by a pod hotel the night before you take the train to a different city. Think about what each part of your trip looks like, what you need from your accommodation, and book accordingly.
