Travel is great right up until your stomach disagrees, your sleep schedule disappears, or your body decides now is the perfect time to do something weird. A little preparation goes a long way when you're far from home.
The basics do most of the work
Travel throws off the routines that normally keep you functioning, so prioritize water, sleep, balanced meals and regular movement even if none of it happens perfectly. A walk, a decent breakfast and a refilled water bottle all count. Staying healthy doesn’t require turning your vacation into a wellness retreat.

Be thoughtful about what you eat and drink
When food or water safety is uncertain, wash your hands, use safe water for everything from drinking to brushing your teeth, and favour food served piping hot or fruit you peel yourself. Trying the local food is part of traveling, but ice, lukewarm buffets and mystery seafood are not always worth the risk.

Do the health admin before you leave
Sort out your vaccines well before you go, especially if you’re planning on street food, remote spots, wildlife, or a longer trip. Bring enough of your prescription meds in the original packaging, pack a basic medical kit, and know what your insurance actually covers before you need it.

Know when a minor problem is no longer minor
A basic medical kit is fine for headaches, motion sickness, stomach issues, and minor scrapes, but it won’t replace a doctor if things get serious. Know how to get help locally, and don’t try to tough out warning signs like chest pain, severe dehydration, trouble breathing, or a swollen, painful leg.
