Sustainable Travel

Sustainable travel can get complicated quickly since nearly everything you do on a trip leaves some kind of footprint. But not every choice is equally important. Focus first on the decisions that shape your whole trip, think about who benefits from your visit, and leave smaller debates, like bamboo cutlery, for later.

Start with the big pieces

The distance you travel, your transportation choices, and how often you move around usually have a bigger impact than smaller actions later. When possible, take trains or other ground transport, use public transit at your destination, stay longer instead of taking several short trips, or sometimes pick a closer place to visit. You don’t need to give up flying completely to make a difference.

Try to spend more of your money locally while you travel

Sustainability is about more than just carbon. Where you spend money on accommodation, meals, tours, and shopping can decide if tourism helps local people or just passes through. Choosing locally owned hotels, guides, restaurants, shops, community businesses, and social enterprises helps your spending make a positive impact nearby.

Respect local resources as if they are someone else's property

Water, energy, and waste systems are different everywhere, and travelers can add extra strain. Use less when you can, avoid making lots of single-use waste, respect rules for wildlife and fragile areas, and pick places to stay that care about resources. Bring your reusable bottle, but remember it’s just one small part of the solution.

Ask for proof when something is called 'sustainable'

It’s easy for businesses to call themselves green online. Instead, look for real details: independent certifications, clear water or energy-saving practices, local hiring, wildlife policies, community partnerships, or a clear breakdown of where your money goes. If a hotel asks you to reuse your towel, that’s helpful, but it doesn’t mean they’re perfect.
