Joining a group tour on your own isn’t cheating when it comes to traveling solo.

Sometimes you want the company and structure without needing a travel partner. I have joined a group tour as a solo four times. Each time, it was because I didn’t have the time or energy to handle all the logistics. The first one I joined was the best. 6 solo travelers, each from a different country and all with roughly similar travel styles. That group chat still exists today. The next three were less successful. Maybe my expectations were too high after the first. I only wished I hadn’t signed up for one of them because there was only one other traveler with me, and we didn’t want the same thing day to day. But even then, I still got the benefits of the logistics and a lot more free time than I had planned on.

I was curious whether others joined a group tour for the same reasons as a solo traveler and how they made the decision. So I went through hundreds of resources, found the best ones, and focused on what matters to help you decide.

**How much freedom are you willing to trade?**
On a group tour, someone else decides when you leave, how long you stay at each place and whether you get to stop at that inviting cafe you spotted. Before booking any tour, look closely at the pace and how much free time it includes. If you love traveling because you can follow your whims and wander, make sure there’s enough flexibility to keep you happy.

**How much built-in company do you want?**
It’s easy to meet people on group tours. Long travel days and shared meals create opportunities automatically. But you don’t get to pick your fellow travelers, and you may have uncomfortable moments and personality clashes. Some tours include age ranges or other joining filters to help, but ultimately it's up to you whether you can handle the unpredictability of traveling with strangers.

**How much planning do you want to do?**
Having someone else handle transportation, figure out where to stay, and plan what activities to do is a relief if you’re short on time or just tired of all the decisions in life. But if planning is half the fun for you, you may lose your favourite part of the trip with a set itinerary. I’ve heard people say they couldn’t get excited about the trip because they weren’t doing the planning buildup.

**Choose a tour that solves a real problem.**
I think tours work best in places that are hard to navigate, involve a lot of logistical decisions, or are just somewhere you’d rather not handle things alone. I probably wouldn’t have booked the sleeper train from Bangkok to the coast on my own, but it was a highlight of the group trip. On the other hand, in Barcelona, I did at times wonder why I had a chaperone to see sights I could have walked to on my own easily.
