Where to travel in Canada

Canada is a huge country, and its size is part of what makes traveling here so special. You might spend one trip hiking around the lakes and mountains of the Rockies, another exploring fishing villages and the rugged coast in Atlantic Canada, or head north to see wildlife and scenery that feel completely different.

Canada’s cities offer a different experience, with great food, unique neighbourhoods, and a mix of cultures that changes from region to region. Whether you want a road trip, a nature getaway, or a city break with some outdoor adventures, Canada has so much variety that the hardest part is choosing where to begin.

Western Canada

Vancouver
Vancouver is a great starting point if you want a city experience with easy access to mountains, the ocean, beaches, and outdoor day trips. It's also a convenient base for visiting Vancouver Island, Whistler, and other parts of coastal BC.

Banff & the Canadian Rockies
If mountains are a top reason for your trip to Canada, Banff and the Canadian Rockies are the places to go. The area is famous for hiking, lakes, wildlife, scenic drives, and winter sports. Most visitors use Calgary as the main gateway.

Whitehorse & the Yukon
The Yukon offers a different side of Canada, with vast landscapes, long summer days, and a strong sense of remoteness. Visitors come here for hiking, road trips, wildlife, and to see the northern lights.

Lake Louise, Alberta

Central Canada

Toronto
Canada's largest city is a great choice for food, culture, museums, sports, and big-city excitement. It's also a convenient base for visiting Niagara Falls and exploring southern Ontario.

Montreal
Montreal is one of the best cities in Canada for food, architecture, festivals, and exploring different neighbourhoods. French is the main language, but most visitors can get by easily in English.

Quebec City
Quebec City is smaller and more historic than Montreal, with a compact old town that feels unique in Canada. It's a great place to visit for a few days or as part of a longer trip around Quebec.

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Atlantic Canada

Halifax & Nova Scotia
Halifax offers a city base with easy access to small coastal towns, beaches, and scenic road trips. Nova Scotia is a good choice if you want a mix of food, scenery, and road trips without long distances between stops.

Newfoundland & St. John’s
St. John’s is the typical starting point, but much of Newfoundland’s charm is found outside the city, with its rugged coastline, small communities, hiking, and wildlife. Newfoundland is ideal if you prefer a slower pace and visiting fewer places.

Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island is small, easy to explore by car, and known for its beaches, small towns, seafood, and rural scenery. It’s a good option if you want a quieter trip that’s simpler to plan than a larger Canada itinerary.

Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

More Canada inspiration

The Rockies, Niagara Falls, and Canada’s big cities often steal the spotlight, but there is so much more to explore. Smaller towns, hidden regions, and chances to see wildlife can be just as exciting as the famous spots.
